- Wolvie game preview
Electronic Gaming Monthly, a magazine I can hardly believe is still around (I was reading it in the very early 90s to read about upcoming Genesis games), recently took a trip behind the scenes of the upcoming video game based on X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. I have played a bunch of the games that feature Wolverine (including "Wolverine's Revenge") and they all pretty much suck. Could this be the one they finally get right?...

- No Megatron in TF2?
JoBlo.com reader "mayhem23" got himself a copy of Empire's new 2009 preview issue and saw some pretty interesting comments from director Michael Bay in the section about TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. [There may be some SPOILERS ahead so I'll warn you now...] Most significant perhaps is that Bay "emphatically" insists there will be no Megatron in TRANSFORMERS 2. Says Bay, "He's not in this movie. That's...

- Hi Hi Birdie?
After what seems like years in development, a remake of BYE BYE BIRDIE may finally be getting off the ground. Sony Pictures has hired Adam Shankman (BEDTIME STORIES) to develop BIRDIE for the big screen. Shankman is no stranger to musicals with HAIRSPRAY already under his belt and a career as a choreographer before making it big as a director. Though many forget, due to the constant bastardized high school versions, the original was a...

- Horton Hears a Hex?
In mid-2008 Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were set to direct a live-action version of DC Comics' JONAH HEX based on a script they wrote. Later that same year Josh Brolin was attached to star in the film and, wouldn't you know it, Neveldine and Taylor were shown the door. (I don't think it's a secret that Brolin and Neveldine & Taylor didn't see eye to eye on a JONAH HEX film.) Warner Bros., looking to get production started this...

Surely one of the most anticipated films in the coming years is the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson collaboration TINTIN. As you all know, the two screen giants are joining forces to bring us the adventures of the popular Belgian comic-strip hero and his faithful dog Snowy using motion capture technology. Not much news has come from the production casting-wise, until now.

Producer Avi Arad is responsible for some of the most classic films of our generation. ELEKTRA, FANTASTIC FOUR, GHOST RIDER and BRATZ are all part of this cinematic visionary's storied repetoire. Ahem. Forgive me if I'm less than excited for the man's next venture--ROBOSAPIEN REBOOTED. Believe it or not, this film is based on the popular toy robot by the same name, which I have never heard of or seen before. And if I never...

- ficlets is going to the land of wind and ghosts. here's how to save your stories.
Ficlets was important to a lot of people. There are over ten thousand writers, thirty-five thousand stories, and eighty thousand comments. It was also important to me. On my author page, I wrote: I am a professional narrative non-fiction writer. I?ve published three books, and write several geeky columns on topics like technology and gaming. What I really want to do, though, is write fiction, and I figured Ficlets was the perfect place to find my fiction voice. The 1024 character limitation, the ability to draw inspiration from quotes and pictures, and the collaborative nature of the prequels and sequels all worked together to help me create some super short stories that I'm still really proud of, like They Don't Come Out at Night, Snowfall, and The Fifteenth. My story A Godawful Small Affair , inspired by listening to way too much Ziggy Stardust (as if there's such a thing!), turned into a truly wonderful collaborative fiction project that branched out into dozens of multiple universes. - i really love trader joe's
This week's LA Daily is all about an awesome cookbook Anne and I discovered entirely by accident, and how it's made cooking fun again - in which wil connects the dots
"I see what you did there," Andrew said. "You should be a writer." "I'm working on that," I said. - Blue Light Mashup - part two
It's the second act, which is where the stakes are typically raised for our heroes, there's a death or betrayal, and we're not quite sure how the good guys are going to prevail ? - Blue Light Mashup - part one
This, dear friends, is why I release everything I do to the Creative Commons. Because you never know when someone's going to take something you made and do something cool with it. - the 2008 year in review, part two
2008 was supposed to be the year that I wrote a whole bunch of fiction. I got a lot of things started, finished an important project, but I didn't finish the two projects that were most important to me. I'm going to blame my failure on losing three months to sinus surgery recovery, and a busier-than-anticipated summer convention schedule. Now, I will look forward to 2009 as the year I'll write a whole bunch of fiction, and publish it, even. As I looked through my archives for 2008, I remembered a year that totally didn't suck. Here are some of the highlights, continued from Part One ? - the 2008 year in review, part one
I went on an awesome date with my wife , and then I went to an awesome convention in Phoenix : The day was a blur of friendly faces, signing autographs and books, shaking hands, posing for pictures, mutual geeking at scientists (there were lots of scientists there, mostly astronomers, who listened patiently to me while I slimed them with my slobbering geekiness) and my constant excitement and wonder that so many people knew about my books and wanted to pick them up. ... In fact, while we were driving there (Anne was driving, I was reading from my book because I got it into my head that it may be a good idea to try something new about 20 minutes before showtime) I said to Anne, "You know what's weird? ... Nolan read Little Brother , and it built a bridge between us that is still strong six months later (that's an eternity in teenager time) Later that night, I noticed that he was sitting in the chair by our family iMac, but instead of playing games or talking to his friends on iChat, he had his head cocked to one side, Little Brother open in his lap. - Geek Madness continues, scrabble is played, and the Gabe Bag is packed
I decided that I would take the week between Christmas and New Year off, but the damn Internets keep pulling me back in! So, here are some various items for today ? I wasn't going to write an LA Daily this week, because the Internets seem to be turned off, but my editor told me that traffic is actually up at the Weekly, so I went ahead and wrote a story about playing Scrabble with Anne ? Mike (aka Gabe) says that playing DD with me and Kurtz and Tycho inspired him to get a DMG and learn how to run a game ?I'm in the Jor-El region. Normally I don't care about this sort of thing, and never take it seriously, but I really like Paul and Storm and I'm totally into the spirit of Geek Madness. Vote early and vote often, my brothers and sisters ? so far, the feedback on the audio version of Happiest Days of Our Lives is overwhelmingly positive. Reader Paulius seemed to really like it ? - happy winter festival of your choice
We celebrate a non-religious, minimally-commercial version of Xmas here in Wheatonland, and the 2008 installment is awesome. Whatever you choose to celebrate this time of year, I hope it's filled with all the stuff you like, none of the stuff you don't like, and that you're surrounded by people you love, because that's how I'm doing it, and it rules. Merry and Happy, everyone! - Happy Birthday, @RedPenOfDoom!
Today is my friend Andrew's birthday ? I treasure Andrew's friendship, and I wouldn't be half the writer I am without his Red Pen of Doom ? I'd love it if everyone who reads my blog took a moment to join me in wishing him a happy birthday.

There are some new photos from Spider-Man 3 over at Joblo.com including the one above. If you ask me this image settles the question of whether in the movie Venom will be from outer space. So Venom has black webbing? Here's a new pic showing Spiderman snagged by the long-tongued, big-fanged dude. Sadly I must admit that I have never read an issue of Spiderman that had Venom in it as a villain (I know! Can you believe it?). So can anyone tell me, does the uber-evil villain in black have black webbing in... - 2007 Movies: Release Dates And Thoughts

When I saw the first full Transformers trailer it blew me away, and apparently it was a pretty good indication of what the film will be like. It seems that the much-beloved (not) MPAA gave the movie an R-rating after viewing it, which is very much NOT what the studio wanted for the movie. Since Steven Spielberg is an executive... - Jeff Briges = Obadiah Stane In Iron Man!
Ok, so Jeff Bridges won't be playing Happy Hogan or even Sal Kennedy (thanks goodness!) but a character from the Layton/Michelinie era: Obadiah Stane! From reports he's sporting a shaved head and a silver/grey goatee. Will we be seeing the Iron Monger armor? That's the armor that Stane built from stolen Stark Technology when he took over the company.... - Review: 300
By Vic Holtreman Rating: 4 out of 5 Short version: Pretty close to being the ultimate "guy movie." I've waited a long time to see 300, the movie inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Spartans. If nothing else, based on the trailers I was expecting a movie that at least visually, would blow me away. My only concern... - Star Trek XI Movie Update
Just a few snippets of info from Wondercon coming from Anthony Pascale of Trekmovie.com and Jeff Bond, some speculation but what the heck: - If it wasn't for an established, non-Trek-related person like J.J. All you Lost fanboy losers out there: you can keep that go-nowhere, yank my chain show... NBC's Heroes is where it's at, baby! If you're not watching it already, hopefully between now and April 23rd (when the show picks up again) you'll have a chance to watch it in reruns. Just kinda, sorta kidding about the fanboy loser comment, BTW.... - Review: The Host (aka Gwoemul)
By Vic Holtreman Rating: 3 out of 5 Short version: Although The Host is unusual, unpredictable and at times funny, it's undercut by a running time that is way too long. The Host is a South Korean horror-comedy film with a serious side to boot. It was made in 2006 and is being released in the U.S. on March 9th,... - Favreau Talks Iron Man Status
Well heck, guess I should have waited a couple of days for my Iron Man movie update post... Over at his MySpace page (via SuperheroHype), Jon Favreau spilled forth a bunch of stuff about where the movie is right now in regards to production. I guess I can continue to hope in vain that he will stop announcing news on... - Lex Leaving Smallville... At The End Like Everyone Else?
Well here's a confusing news story: I just read over at BuddyTV.com (link at end of article) that Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor to perfection on the TV show Smallville, is leaving the series... at the end of the seventh season. Why is this confusing? Because my understanding is that the series was going to end at the end... - Bunch Of Iron Man Updates
It's been a while since I posted any Iron Man movie updates so I thought I'd just summarize news from the last week or so... There's a short video interview with Robert Downey Jr. over at IESB.net where he discusses his take on the character (arms manufacturer who becomes conflicted about what he does) and how it's going with the... - Geico Caveman Doomed
According to a story in Variety, a TV sitcom is being developed at ABC based on the very popular Geico Insurance caveman commercials. "'Cavemen' will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta." I'll be the first to tell you that I love those commercials, but it's quite...
